After removing the internals and externals I have found that starting half way down the to the bottom of transom and about 4" on either side is rotted out. For integrity is it best to replace just the bottom half which would turn out to be around 7" height and about 18" wide or do I cut a perfect square out around the whole and replace it all which would be about 24" x 24"???

Sorry for some reason the words bellhousing were deleted. So half way down the belhousing to the bottom is rotted and also replacement of the the whole area surrounding the bellhousing would be the second option. Thanks

less work to do the whole transom in one piece,,will be stronger then doing just the lower..most likely their is other rot higher up and hidden behind the glass..

General rule of thumb is you only see about one fifth of the actual rot. Better to do the whole thing.

I agree. replaced the transom in my cruiser 2 yrs ago. Quick checking it appeared to be localized in a small area. But from the advise on here, I went the complete route. I found areas that 1 layer of the transom was wet in spots (soaked in 1 area), while the other layers in the same location was dry. The glass between the layers acted as a barrier in areas preventing water from absorbing to the adjoing layers. The more I removed, the more bad I found.

Well, you guys were correct. Rot like cancer. I got all of it out now and am ready to start rebuilding it...... Please tell me the hard part is over.......................

Hi I have the same boat you have with the same problem but I also have to replace my floor and stringers I'm in the process of removing my engine do you have any more pics
