Question Flex-plate????

Hey all,

I am putting the last bits on the motor and when I lifted the flywheel, I had to ask myself why not buy a performance flexplate from Summitt or someone. Could save a few pounds of weight!

Does anyone know of a reason why not to use a flex plate in a Marine application? I never see them mentioned....

TXBOATER, I saw nobody replied so I will. First I have a fairly heavy flywheel heaver than the first one that was on the boat
its easyer on the O/D when shifting and with big cams it is less likely to stall when going into gear. Also with big cams a flex plate
will let the motor realy lump at idle, this could cause reversion.
I don't have a Bravo set-up but I am sure it would be hard on the
rubber drive coupler coming out of the hole. Stay with the heavy flywheel. GEO

GEO,

Thanks a bunch for the reply! Makes sense what you are saying. Boats need the inertia and extra strength.

Thanks again,

Bob

i posted a similiar question a while back and the biggest concern was the motor over revving too fast when coming out of the water and bogging down upon re-entry from not enuff inertia.

The standard flyweel for big block weighs 30 lb.if you have a mark IV 454-502 you can get one that weights 15 lb. and will help increase the throttle response but you will have to change the starter nose!Chevy part number 3963537 flyweel ID 3935411

Florida-I posted a couple that I had on hand under the proping thread. It's time for me to stand back and shoot a couple of progress pics for people. Now I just have to find the time to stop...
