Default Notched Transom purpose?

What is the purpose of having a notched transom? I see them on a few boats and hear that some people have to fill them in to change out to different types of drives..

I believe it allows you to feed water to drives set at a higher X.

its like a built in set back box. Higher drive height = less drag = more speed.

Aha.. That makes sense.. So is notching the transom a feasable upgrade or is that way too involved for a boat that didn't come from the factory that way?

no no no, its not for the Skater.. That damn thing does NOT need to go any faster than it is.. Just been looking at some project boats and trying to educate myself a little on their setups.
