Best way to do it is to go there yourself and inspect everything before handing cash over. That's the safest everything else is just trust.

I've bought a few engines through OSO. I asked the seller detailed questions and then paid with Pay Pal. If the item is not as discribed you can dispute the item with Pay Pal. It's not a sure thing but its better than just writing a check. Out of all the things I've bought off of OSO I've only had to dispute one item.

Paypal is only safe if you use a CC that has a good dispute policy.

I had a deal go bad a few years ago, paid with paypal but used cash out of my checking account. I won the dispute, but paypal never paid me because the guy did not have money in his account. Kept getting a message that "Pay pal is attempting to retrieve your funds" Had I used a CC I could have opened the dispute with with them.

My purchase was 2 Merc 440hps "fresh" converted to 500+ HP. Only ran in salt a few times and flushed. One engine had a pin hole in the head near the valve, All heads had to be changed because they were too thin from salt errosion. Valve was stuck, water in cyl, and would only turn over by hand 1 1/2 times till I reached the froxen valve.

The other ran, but the "fresh water headers" leaked from internal salt corrosion, the headers were a complete loss.

Seller *****ed at me on the phone, saying I got a good deal at $15k and I was a wannbe boater because ALL engines should be gone through when swapped.

The pictures in the ad were great, of course after the fact I relaized he took those before the install. I wish I had looked at them first, lesson learned.

You spell checking me now RHR?

frozen valve was actually rusted in the guide, not a pretty sight on "mostly fresh water low hour engines"

And I did have someone check in on him, however his business was closed by the time the dispute was over. Should have started a thread on him, I can't even remember his name now. Was 2007
