How fast will a 38' non avs scarab be with pair of 625 hp 540s with xr drives. I am trying to decide on avs or non avs hull. The price of poker goes up on avs hull. is it worth it ? thanks Tim

Go for the AVS hull ----You wont be sorry!!

The AVS hull is faster than the Non-AVS hull by as much as 20 to 25 miles per hour with the same power....Also the unique aft vented step system of a Wellcraft AVS hull provides a measure of high speed control competitive step designs cant match....The advanced hydrodynamics provide ventilation for straight line speed plus controlled water flow when turning pressures are exerted. The result is instant response and positive control much like a traditional deep V.
Stepped hull designs burst onto the high performance scene with the promises of more speed from less horsepower. Several boat builders jumped on the bandwagon introducing variations of the same basic vented step design.Competitive hulls deliver the promised speed as long as the boat is traveling in a straight line. However,in an aggressive turn at speed, it becomes very apparent where design compromises were made...Most of the competitive stepped hulls skid, or slide out of a tight turn resulting in discomfort and concern.........

I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion! I think reading the article in Powerboat Mag.Aug. 2006;page 61 , written by MattTrulio Might clear up a lot of misconseptions......
The simple fact is "by the mid-1990s conventional V-bottoms builders were at a serious marketing disadvantage"
Here is a Quote from the article in which Mike Fiore says - "back in 1984, we had a 32 - foot Hustler with 700-hp engines and Arneson drives that went 101 mph--I think powerboat even tested it,he adds That it was the best V-bottom of the day..But our 39 Outerlimits today runs almost 100 mph with 525s in it"

A 38AVS runs about 10-12mph faster than a straight bottom 38 with 500HP's. The AVS runs low 80's and straight bottom about 70.
That boat is not running as fast as it should be. I have 2 freinds that have/had 33AVS's with 502mpi's and they both will run 80mph. With 500hp's it should run 85-88mph.
