Default Need Low Down on Duramx

Can someone give me the low down on the chevy duramax diesels. I've hear you don't wanna buy anything older then a 06/ due to injector issues. Can anyone tell me if that's not entirely true. I wan to get one and have to keep my budget low as possible. Any help would be appreciated.

Oh and I'm towing a 88 Formula 311.

The 2004.5 up to 2006 would be my favorite for several reasons. Injectors are part of that.

You can save your injectors by mixing some oil in your fuel and watch the balance rates. Seemed to have fixed my prob so far as the rates today are what they were over 1.5 years ago. If I had only known -

The engine code is on your glove box door (LLY).

prior to 08 means no DPF which means better MPG I can tell you that much. You know everybody has some story about one engine or another. For Ford people talk chit about 6.0, well ford used them for a long time and didnt have issues with mine.

+1

I've got an '05 with 126K trouble-free miles on it. Nothing but fluid changes.

I'm like old school, 114,000 mi and pretty much just general maintenance.

I tow a 38 ft. fifth wheel and go all over the country with it.

By the way , i always mix 2 cycle oil with the diesel fuel. Half ounce per gallon or close to that.

The early LB7's ('01-'02) had injector issues. Arguably the best DMax motor was the LBZ ('06-'07.5). I had an '04.5 LLY and it was flawless. I recommend doing some browsing here for anything you ever wanted to know, good and bad, about the DMax --> http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/index.php

2001-2004 LB7 had injector issues. GM issures and extrended warrenty for 200k, and 7years? but Thats over as they are all over 7 years now.

I bought mine with 140k on it, and 3 months left before it was 7 years old. got all 8 injectors replacesd.

LB7 is known for one oof the stornest motors, no emissions, and sounds better to most.

BUT that being said they all pull Great, and 2004.5-2005 still had the 5 speed alisson, in 2006 you got the 6 speed. (wish i had that).

I bought a new 05 LLY in 2005. Never had one problem in 7 years and we tow every weekend, our lake is 3.5 hours away one way.

If you get an 04.5-05 LLY do an updated mouthpiece on the turbo or an aftermarket AFE mouthpiece. You can google LLY mouthpiece to see what I'm talking about.

This is the best truck I have ever owned. Period

08 here and love mine , tow a 29 fountian and a 32 ft travel trailer , does have the dpf but the 6 speed makes up for the loss which is not as bad as people think. I have a buddy that has an 05 and we get about the same mpg..

What is the advantage of the new mouthpiece? I have done no mods to mine....It's not a race truck!!!

Disclaimer: I have replaced the fuel filters once....and both front hubs needed replacing @ 50-60K miles(junk).
