Default surface wax removal

any quick ways of removing surface wax from my boat, I just gelcoated it and am blowing through paper like a mad man, so far I have been wet sanding with 320 and dawn dish soap in the water but it seems to be taking forever, heres some pics of it, any ideas would be great

320 is pretty fine to start. I usually break with 180 or 220 then go from there. You need a coarser grit to level it first. What did you shoot it with, what kind of gun? Straight gel and wax?

I shot it with a cheap titan gravity feed gun with a 2.3 tip, thinned it 10% with styrene, and added about 10% wax in last coat. had to drop to about 1/2% MEK to keep it from kicking in gun, should I dry sand it with 180 or 220, wet sanding seemed to keep paper cleaner

on big stuff like that i usually shoot heavy with a waxed gel and do my shaping with 180 then soften it up a bit with 240 or so. Then i go back with a couple coats of gel and Duratech then work that surface for its final gloss. 1/2% is pretty light, what was the temp where you are at?

temp was about 75 in my garage, very low humidity, started at 2% and it kicked in about 4 minutes, almost lost the gun, cut in half and that gave me about 8 minutes, barely enough time to get it shot and gun cleaned, 1/2% gave me between 15 and 20 minutes. I was worried about it curing with that little catalyst but the next morning it was hard as a rock.
Can you spray multiple layers waxed?

wet on wet yes you can spray multiple layers but if it has cured it must be sanded. Well as long as its cured your good to go i would have been nervous at 1/2% to but if you have the heat thats ok. I dont spray much gel through an automotive gun and can usually get the gun empty quick enough to not have a prob. Ya develop a system after you've ruined a few guns lol. I mix on the fly and run acetone through the gun between each new mix so that remaining gel does not become a problem.

thanks for the info, I'm gonna try some 180 or 220 tonight and see how that goes, I think we put on about 6.5 or 7 gallons of gel, I went thru that much acetone keeping 3 gun clean, I'll let you know how I make out, this is all new to me, thanks again.

What a ton of work !!! One question why ???? The first thing I do when I do a restoration projest is plan on painting , surfacer / sand / urethane / sand / clear then dry san hook it II then buff . I have never seen any gelcoat even on high end new boats that I couldnt find dry spots and swirl marks . Not breaking your balls it just seem like a ton of work unless your planning on painting over that gel ?
