The only relation to Baja is that Doug Smith, who started Baja in the 70's and sold it to Brunswick in the 90's, now owns Checkmate. He has known Bill Combs who started Checkmate in the 60's. Bill Combs is now in his 80's and wanted to retire. Doug was tired of retirement and bought Checkmate in 2007. All the old employees are still there including the Combs brothers. He has definitely started using alot better rigging on the boats and brought a few new models to the line. It's a totally new boat, not modeled after anything before.

nice i have always liked checkmates back in the day i had a 13' with an 85 horse on it used it in the local bays all the time the boat did everything well for a boat of its size i think they are a lot of boat for the money imo
