Exhaust leak! How Many$$$$
#1
I have one exhaust gasket that leaks on my 312 Formula. This is a rebuilt 454Mag, with stock Mercruiser manifolds & risers w/straight thru-hulls, no y-pipes or captains call.
A mechanic wants to replace the gasket, on my lift, in my dock. How much would be resonable for a "house call" type repair on your own dock???
A House call like this has got to be worth something, right???

So, still no reply???? What's it worth???
$50, $100, $150.........come on guys, this kind of repair is simple, but still a pain in the butt!! & it will be ready when you get back to the lake! Just fire it up & go!! Surely, ya'll have an opinion here!!

Ok, this is only a guess. I'm no mechanic.
Trip charge $60
1 hour wrenching $60
gasket $10
total: $130+tax
This doesn't include any seized or broken bolts. It also assumes that you have a very acessible engine. Twins with 2" between manifolds don't count.

do it yourself, Get a set of stainless bolts, some antiseize
and a rachet with a 9/16ths socket (I think)
go to town
first riser, then exhaust manifold
take you in a single about an hour max
and it costs you for bolts and gaskets

oh yes, I forgot to mention, I will have 23 relatives at my lake house this weekend,,,starting friday!! No time!! My wifes family reunion!! This is what has made the repair "on site" necessary. One does NOT buy another boat, sell his perfectly good blown 25 foot Formula & then have the new boat "DOWN" during HER reunion!!
That would NOT be good!! When SHE's happy, I'm happy......when she not, I'm VERY unhappy

J-L...what's up hommie!!??!!
b-f, You may want to think about that 1 hour figure for labor. If you catch a snag, (i.e. broken bolts, gasket residue that will not scrape off for s***, etc....) the minutes will stack up quick. Plus $60/hour for ON SITE sounds pretty damn resonable. I know guys who get 75-80/hour for work done in their shop. Plus-minor point here-$5 for gasket sealer tube, unless, like me you have 15 m-f-ing half used tubes laying in the tool box, to the point you get a chemical high when you open the tool box lid!!
Oh yeah, J you are right about the 9/16 and I would not use neversiez unless you were bolting into aluminum heads. If they are iron use locktite.....New stainless bolts are a good idea. I know, I'm rambling here....it's those damn physcotherapy drugs, er....um....nevermind that...

Whats up tool tosser?
LOL
Yeah stainless steel bolts for exhaust 100% necessary
Home depot and you can pick up a batch cheap
Hey allan, what is the new record for tossing a 3.8ths rachet?
I got mine about 100 feet or so
then I got pissed at the old cast iron intake manifold and tossed that about 20 feet in to the yard, Made a wonderful dent in the grass, was sticking up like a toumb stone!!!
Miss ya on the board, you need to revisit more often
