Hello guys, i'm new to this forum. it seems that i get here the right advise and information i'm looking for.
I'm living in Kuwait and since the sea is infront of my door and the fuel is cheap i have the great opportunity to own a boat.
Back in germany i'm living far away from the sea, fuel is horibbly expensive and on close by rivers or lakes you have speed and polution limits and the water is cold so realy no need/joy for a boat over there.
I have a '83 233 Formula with a 260HP carb SB and pre alpha drive.
Recently i got an almost incredible offer for an '95 7,4L LX EFI MP F557688 engine including a complete Bravo Three drive, controls, gauges, wiring, trim pump etc...
All out of a similar sized boat installed ex factory.
I will install it in my 233 Formula.
As i found out the engine should have 330HP on the prop shaft.
Before the install i want to make sure everything is fine and won't give me any headache within the next years...
The complete unit has run 470hrs.
Now i'm a quiet good and well experienced tech guy but in general only by one german vehicle brand.
So the american engine stuff is quiet new and there are so many things available that i actually lost overview after a few days of research.
Now here are my question where i would appreciate any info or advice:
1: Does this engine has proper internals (forged/ or only cast)? If not any recomendations?
2: Since i'm opening the engine to verify if everything is fine and if required do some overhaul, i want to increase the poweroutput. definatelly will keep it fuel injected with the original intake manifold.
What is a good cam, valve spring and rocker arm setup?
What to expect from it?
3: Is it essential for the power to have an GIL or CMI header set on it?
4: Should i look after anything specific issues, means are this engines known to have issues in an specific area?
5: General recomendations?
last but not least a photo of the engine after removal from the other Boat:

regards
Rouven

Not sure where you are located but I do have several good Customers in Kuwait City, an Dubai that I have been working with for the last several years, Engines, drive combinations, and so forth. Send me a PM if you like perhaps we can discuss what you are trying to achieve.

Thanks for the reply,
i have another question, this engine has a compression ratio of 8,6:1 is it the same as on the normal TBI injected 310HP engines or same as on the Mag MPI 385HP?
I send a request to comp cams for a complete kit (cam, rocker arms, push rods, roller rockers etc.)

Does it make sense to source a used complete crank assembly (Crank, rods, ballancer) plus cam and heads of an 502 MAG MPI to stroke my motor?
then bore the block put new rings on the pistons and install it all together with an updated mefi with mapping of the 502.
are there other parts required as well, like distributor?

much would depend upon your source... US or Loacal. If you are going to source out to the US you would be better off buying a completed engine ready for installation, less accessories. Otherwise, you only lack the block and machining if sources local.

A 502 crank will not increase the stroke of your 454/7.4, further on the 454 block will not let itself to be bored to the 502 diameter (4.47")
Your engine could be one of the early 7.4's with peanut port heads, cast crank and pistons and the rectangular port Lingenfelter intake. Not much to do about it, you would need a better crank and heads to start with.

Been there, tried this, it doesn't work. Search the forums and you will find a lot of similar attempts, and general consensuses is to not waste the money
You can build more power, but you will have to start over from scratch.
The cam, intake, heads and exhaust and computer are matched to do what it does and to do it well. You have to make changes to all of them to see much of a difference, and by that point you have started from the ground up.
Its a good motor for what it does, and will run for ages if well taken care of, so enjoy it as it is.
