I have heard advice and seen the results of using toilet bowl cleaner for cleaning the yellowing on hulls. So i did it last night

looks like a new boat!!!!! .......but
is this product doing any damage to the gelcoat?


any chemists or boat mfg people that actually know if it is ok or not?

case in point. I used to use clorox on my first boat vinyl (back when i was young and stupid, now I'm just stupid) it looked great till two weeks later when the grime came back!!!

talked to a chemist friend and he told me NOT to use clorine products on vinyl. the clorine breaks down the vinyl molecule, opening it up and causing dirt/grime to get within the vinyl molecules, thus requiring continuous cleaning from then on .....


so..... anyone know?

I think I will at least buff and get two good coats of carnuba on it, what other choice do I have now?

I use "The Works" shower and tub cleaner. Cuts through deposits fast and doesnt harm trailer paint. I also use it in the shower. It has acid in it same as hull cleaners.

I don't think it should cause you any problems. It's very similar in composition to many other hull cleaners. I goes without saying (even though I will) that it will strip your wax off. Make sure you wax after using it. It is up to you to decide whether to wax your hull bottom (debates on that question have created lengthy threads on OSO).

SnoBowl works good, but it takes the wax off and leaves bare fiberglass to the elements. Make sure you slap a coat of wax on anytime you use it, or it will be a b**ch to clean the next time.

Also, you might try a really good teflon wax. A friend uses one from Boaters World and he can basically rinse the grand river scum off of his boat with a hose.

I second "the Works" I've also had good luck with "lime Away" toilet bowl cleaner. Leave it on for 10-25 minutes and it does most of the work for you. Works good getting the Mississippi scum off.

last sunday (and saturday) we went to "laketown" which is the dunes area just south of Holland. We put in Holland most of the time since we live in Hamilton. but are in G.H on occasion.

I have a black/yellow/white Formula 272. You may have seen my old boat, an '86 red 211 liberator in G.H. with RAMBUNCTIOUS across the back. During smoke I saw him and talked to him a while. the boat looked good still.
