Default Can I use a alpha one gen II gimbal ring on a alpha gen 1

My gimbal ring has bad splines and I need a new one. I found a great deal but it is for a gen ii and I have a gen 1. Will they be compatible? Could i make them fit with minor modding? This is actually for a 1977 pre alpha drive but i know the pre alpha and alpha rings are the same. Sorry i know some of you hate when people use the term pre alpha but I keep getting confused with the different names before alpha and I cant remember the correct one. Thanks

You have the one drive, before any Alpha's. I don't think any gimbal rings ever had any splines. They were square and the steering lever had the splines on the old ones. I might have a used one laying around if you're interested.

I have a mint (mint) pre Alpha (I believe pre Alpha is called an MR ) as well as Aplha gen 1 transom assemblies. Been trying to get rid of them on Craigslist but no bites yet. Shoot me a PM if interested. Give ya a smokin deal, I bought a fishing boat for the Aplha driveline to put in an old Sidewinder I have with an MR but decided to start rounding up Jet parts instead to do a conversion next winter

I pulled mine off today and I defiantly have the spline shaft. Can I just swap in the new square ring + new square arm that goes through hull? I know there was a bearing in the gimbal housing right where the upper swivel pin goes through does this need to be replaced? What about seals? Thanks

Rams lenth is shorter on Gen II. the Gen II gimbal ring is wider than the Alpha One plus the pin and rubber grommets are different. U will need the Gen II transom assembly bolted up to the transom.

Then it would be wise then to add the gear lube res. monitor. Some people grind out the old alpaha one gimbal ring to mount the Gen II outdrive and all they find out sooner than later it cracks the gimbal ring at its narrowest point.

Also the Gen II outdrive mount to a MR or I that U have to the bellhousing will never work. The bell housing from MR to Gen II are different. All totally different parts here.

Sorry I forgot to say that I found a gen 1 alpha gimbal ring locally for a good price. I will be using that one because it has the newer square swivel shaft. My question was what else should I replace by where the swival pin goes into the gimbal housing. Im thinking the seals should probably be replaced? Also the two bearings that are in the housing by the swivel pin, how tight should then be? I can turn them by hand but not so super easy, but not drastically hard ether. Also how do I remove those seals? Thanks!

Ok so I got the new housing along with the ring. and the person i got it from said it was from an 89 boat. I thought for sure it would be a gen 1 bc I thought gen 2 started around 92. Anyways I just looked up the serial and it is a gen 2. So im back to my origanl post. As of now I have the gen 2 housing along with ring and steering arm. Once I pull the engine could I just mount this whole gen 2 assembly to the transom? Will the mounting bracket inside the boat still work even thought it is a pre alpha bracket? Thanks

go get a real gen I alpha housing. or else go get a gen II drive. you can buy a whole boat with bad motor and missing drive for a couple of hundred bucks these days. gen I and II are not compatible. first look at the shifter where drive attaches to bell housing. is it the same as your MR-1-pre-alpha? or is it different? if same, it is GenI.

I was just going to use my existing pre alpha bell housing bc I didnt get the gen 2 bell housing. I dont see why this would be a problem if i just use my existing bellhousing. Thanks
