Default Wet sanding, when to change discs?

When using finer grit 2k and higher for wet sanding how do you tell when the disc that your using is no longer cutting and its time for a new disc?

If your wet sanding at 2k, it is time to pony up the foam pad, finish it. Some say to wet sand with 3-4-5k but the rag you wax with will cut harder then that.

lol

as asked up there already what are you sanding with, DA or hand? Paint or gel?

Anything above 1500 and you should be using either Mirkas Abralon or 3M's Trizak pads. If you are trying to scrub oxidation off Abralon 1000 wet works pretty good for that.

Dave, this is going to be for gelcoat with a DA I need to sand down and buff the Donzi that I drug home this past winter.

BTW. The Cig hatch turned out pretty good I used both Abralon and Trizact (different grits) on it. That stuff is great to work with.

Gel is pretty hard on fine DA finishing paper. Generally you might get one or two sq ft out of them before they are junk. I like them sharp so i go through tons. I wouldnt go past 1000 for paper (foil back) and switch to Abralon for anything higher.

For oxidized gel i just hit it with 1000 Abralon and maybe 2000 if i am low on compound. I can usually get the results i want without going any finer. Totally buff will take 2000 marks right out no prob.
