Default 1996 mercruiser 7.4 mpi efi wont go past 2200 rpm

The motor starts and idles perfect up to like 2200 rpm , i checked the mech fuel pump that pumps the fuel to the electric pump in the vst tank and when i turn over the motor i can put my finger over the pump out side on the fuel pump and can stop the fuel from being pumped out without using force with my finger, any help would be appericated thanks jimmie

**** can the entire mess mech. pump and VST. you will be fighting these forever not to mention vapor lock issues.. There are countless OSO'ers with same issues.
the perm. fix is the Aeromotive pump, fuel regulator and 100 micron filters off the pump,, return fuel back to the tank and move on.
I'm in process my self too... Its bull sh-t but is what it is.

Try cleaning out the water separator first that is typically the problem. Then check the cool fuel if that doesn't fix it.
