Default removing surface wax from cured resin?

This is probably a stupid question. How do you remove the surface wax from cured resin, 1708 layup? Is the only way to sand it? If so, how do you get in all the little recesses? Does Acetone remove it? I want to coat the repair with gelcoat.

sand with 80 then wipe with acitone an a little wire brush then wipe again..
