My uncle has a 1960something Chris craft that needs restored and he wants a no soak bottom installed. One shop in Ohio quoted him a price last year and since has doubles that quote this year without even seeing the boat. They want $40,000 to do the work. Does this seem out of line or is this about par for these things. Best I know it's about 18-20ft boat. Definitely not any bigger. I believe it's a continental now that I think about it. I know nothing about wooden boats and need some help here so he can get this thing going again.

Try this guy he is very well known in the wooden boat community http://www.riddleboatworks.net/
He will probably recommend a new planked bottom with two bi directional veneered layers "cold molded" vacuum bagged over the planking
Wooden Boat magazine has a good forum also that can help point you and your uncle in the right direction for reputable builders and cost,,,the down side is you're not gonna find it cheap when rebuilding a wooden boat they are labor intensive...
Without seeing the boat I would say you are looking at an easy 500 hrs
I will be starting up a deck replacement in another month on an 80 yr old 28' wooden Elco with canvas going down over the planking and that job will push into the hundreds when everything is said and done...
