Default Question for the Mercruiser Experts

I have a pair of 500 HP's that were set up for Bravos. I have now set them up for Speedmaster 3's. I of course have changed the drive hubs. I did measure the off set of the transmission input shaft and the flexplate and everything seemed good. I have now installed the starters and they do not have enough travel to engage with the ring gear. Any ideas? Are the flywheels different in a Bravo setup compared to TRS or Speedmaster. Any input would be great. Thanks.

Are they Top mount starters?
If so, the ring gear has to moved to back of flywheel.
The older flywheels had a shoulder turned on the to configure either way.

You can also have the flywheel machined to accept the ring gear on the other side, if it does not have the extra groove. Had this done once and worked perfect with no issues.

If you are running a top mount starter are you running a rear mount plate? Flywheel housing is cut to allow for the plate.

Thanks rws and 4bus, that is the problem. I will have to move the ring gear to the back of the flywheel. And yes the housing has been machined for the rear motor plate. Thanks again for the help guys.
