I found a squadron 27 that might be for sale and before placing an offer I wanted to know a little about the boat. I have read the forum and know a bit about the history of squadron but since so few were made it's hard to find a lot of owner feedback and information. Like, how does the boat handle in big water? What types of speeds can I expect with a 496 ho? And other minor info such as gas tank capacity, dry weight, common problems to look for in these boats?

Here's a pic of the HIN. I read that only 18 were made but this HIN says # 21. Or am I missing something?

As I understand it,when AranowAs sold Cigararette company,he had a non compete clause which limited him to 12 boats a year.My friend had a squadron 39 which appeared to be setup for smuggling.Long range tanks and no cabin interior,and black gel coat.This was sold at a DEA auction.

Hard to see all the HIN #'s (glairy)......but 27 definately denotes the lenght followed by 02 (production # 02?) last two would be the year....82?

My guess was hull #21 made in Aug 1982, but I am doubting myself because I have read on several threads that only 18 were made. Hope to get some feedback regarding the hull number.

I know this is a late response....

First two numbers are the length (27), the next 3 numbers are the production number (021), next two are the month (08), and last two are the year (82). So, according to how those numbers are supposed to read, it's #21 built in Aug of 82. That's the first sign I've seen of one past the number 18. Problem is, I'll swear I saw that #14 was built in 83, because I remember thinking it was such a long time between my #12 of 1981, and the #14 of 1983. Hmm... Might have to search the forum to find the reference to the #14. The vin tag sure looks legit.


100 gallons, They listed it as 4,200lbs with TRS and BBC in the original brochures. Only problems would be possible transom rot from the usual neglect of an old boat. Otherwise the hull is pretty bullet proof with full bulkheads everywhere... even under the cockpit - definitely a race layup compared to the 20's, regular 24's, and the 28's.

To try to help you out, I went down to the archives and pulled the 27 folder. I still have a copy of the title. It is titled as a 1981 Cigarette serial # XEX270140881 I bought the boat in May 1987 on brokerage from Everglades Marine. It was a great boat, I sold it locally to a guy near Annapolis named Kenny Boss in September 1987, I was planning on moving up to a bigger boat.

I guessing The guy bought the boat based on his signature?
