Default engine wont go past 4000rpm

Ok I finally got me 24 outlaw in the water for the first test run. We took it out and everything seemed fine except it would not rev more than 4000rpms. It's smooth fuel pressure is good just hits a wall.

565ci was told 650hp
bravo 1/ 1.5 ratio
28p bravo left hand

Also runs 58mph at 4000
even if I trim will not gain revs.

What is your timing set at and is it advancing properly, should be 32+ degrees total timing depending on motor.

Are the secondaries on the carb opening all the way? Throttle linkage?

Was the motor set up on a dyno?

We do need to time it we only set it at 12 at idle. Didn't want to run it at 3000 on the hose and forgot the light when we went to the lake.

MSD distributor and 6 box.

throttle is set and goes all the way open.
the holley 850 was tuned on the motor before I bought. I bought the engine used.

Verify that the MSD distributor doesn't have the timing advance locked out. If it is you will only see your 12 degrees of timing.

Timing would be your issue.

going to try and put it in the water tonight and set the timing. Kind of sucks on a time crunch going to the shoutout this weekend at the loto. I was also told to unhook the tach and take out the revlimiter. Cant hurt just a quick plug.

Ok we went out last night. Timing was dead on 34. we unhooked the tach to make sure no interference and that didn't change anything. we took out the rev chip and nothing changed. The secondaries are working. checked with the air cleaner off. fuel pressure is holding at 7psi.
This thing starts nice idles nice. Jumps on plane with no problem in fact all i do is set it at 2200 and then it just planes right out. But when we get to 4000 rpms just runs out no more.
Could it be just bad fuel???

How old is the fuel? It it is bad fuel you are going to have some serious problems at 34 degrees very soon

How is the engine temp?

Did you get a dyno sheet on the engine? Wondering where the peak HP and TQ hit, you might be over propped. I doubt it at 565ci, but maybe

What prop was on the boat before? I would switch to a lower pitch prop first and see if the problem stays.

man, without being there or video it is hard to say... It could be that they have a cam that tops out there, my best guess.. What cam is in it and where did the motor come from? did they give you a build sheet?
