for the performance aspect of going fast would you be slowing the boat down if when someone sprayed gel coat they never wet sanded it or buffed it? on the bottom of the boat that is

yep, we tried 220 on the bottom of the batboats with good results. SOB to keep clean though.
As for the original question you could probably get away with a gel/Duratech finish but it would still be pretty rough. Not sure why you would want to go the effort of gel coating the bottom of a boat but only go half way through the process.

pending condition of the existing running surface you could be anywhere from six to ten thousand. Its an ambitious and arduous task to say the least.
