removing painted graphics from on top of gel coat

has anyone ever removed graphics that are painted on over gel coat? on a 20 year old boat is it possible to do without telling they were there? something like sanding the paint off then wetsanding and buffing the gel on the whole boat?
any insight cost ideas before and after pictures?

nearly impossible without seeing a shadow. There is almost always some sort of UV fading, still its worth a shot but be prepared to do some painting if it doesnt pan out. Your looking at probably a 90% chance of it not working, sorry to be the barer of bad news.

I have a 93' Powerplay - white gelcoat hull with imron paint stripes.... I'd like to update the color of the stripes (maintaining the same graphics to avoid fade/shade issues of original gelcoat). Any recommendations for process?
