Default Gelcoat restoration

Any suggestions on how to get the aqua color to look new again? I tried last season with 3M rubbing compound and wax, didn't work. Wetsanding?? If so, what level grit??

You just missed a step. 2000 grit WET sand, then repeat what you did last year. Keep it real wet.

I used the Maguires products. Number 49 compound and number 56 carnuba wax if memory serves.

Nice looking Co-pilot too brutha. Good Luck.

Fountain of Youth compounds and waxes!

I was also using the 3M products and they never worked great on Gel only on paint. Then I read a thread that GlassDave posted about Fountain of Youth with before and after pictures and decided to try it. And it works great! You might not even need to wet sand, I didn't. I bought the Vibra cut, Totally buff, and Vitreo.

Personally not a fan of wet sanding unless 100% necessary. Black finishing pad with Collonite Fiberglass Cleaner, Aqua Buff 1000/twisted wool then Aqua Buff 2000/lambswool on rotary to get started. Further refining may be necessary with Meguiars 105/205 as well to clarify the finish. Getting a damaged colored hull back is very labor intensive and requires continuous maintenance after restoring it. And by continuous maintenance I mean like quarterly polishing or more.

I used this on my black gelcoat windscreen and it worked great. Used a wool pad on a rotary buffer. No wetsanding needed. Might be worth a shot...

This is after 1000 grit wetsand, then I compounded the scratches out with what was left of the 3M stuff from last year...still have to polish and wax, but it looks a lot better

I have used many compounds over the years. 3M is great on cars but NOT gelcoat. The BEST product and easiest to work with is "Presta Super Cut" compound plus it is about half the price of 3M. I usually wetsand with 1200 (1000 if necessary). But the Presta cuts through pretty well on its own. I brought my 40' cruisers burgandy back last summer. But after 40 hours on the wheel I needed a massage!!! So be prepared it will take ALOT of elbow grease to bring it back. But so worth it in the end. Also the best wax I found is collonite. I use it on both cruiser and gofast. Works GREAT! Good Luck!!

Having trouble with the vibra cut keeps clogging the the wool pad and doesnt seem to dry on it, My garage is about 55 deg. could that be the problem? Super duty seems to work better. Im using a new snap on buffer. Should I try something else?
thanks Keith
