Default Last cushion of Fountain sundeck, two piece hinged?

I am reupholstering (skins) on my sundeck. I got to the sundeck cushion closest to the stern and found the treated plywood under the cushion cut (ripped) the full length of the cushion. The edges that abut one another are 45 degree angles. The smaller piece has rust spots as if staples were in it. Is this cushion two piece to flex when the hatch opens? Is there suppose to be a continuous hinge or just the cushion and vinyl support the ripped piece of plywood?

The aft most smaller wood piece is just stapled to the larger top section. The foam and vinyl help keep the angled shape. Mine came loose, (from people sittng on hatch and pulling up on that piece) so I removed the skin and foam, glued it back together using screws, then layed down a couple layers of glass on each side. Solid as a rock now

Thank you.
I could not figure out what the broken staples that had nothing attached were for.
I went back out after reading your description of what you did. My two pieces were just flat. My staples were rusted and broken. Will glue and screw it back at an angle down. Thanks again.
