Default Cheaper alternative to Merc Power steering pump Part# 16792A39

The price of the mercruiser power steering pump is ridiculous so I was doing some research.

Summit racing offers an unpainted steel reservoir from Tuff Stuff Performance parts that has a return tube that is located very very close to same postition that is on the mercruiser pump reservoir. The part number is 5501C. The price is less then $40.00.

I read on iboats that saginaw power steering pump part # SP17250 works great as a replacement for the actual pump. This is a Fenco reman pump. If anyone has a part# for the AC Delco pump only that is used in these merc pumps that would be great! The price of the fenco at Advanced Auto parts is also around $40.00. Summit racing also has other pump only pumps as well. Just not sure if the threads are the same for the mounting studs or not. The AC Delco part# I found is Part #: 36-516250 GM Part #: 88985201. If someone can verify this will work post your findings.

So if you take the outlet fitting, flow control valve and mounting studs out of your old pump, put them in the new pump you could have a pump for under $100. You also have to paint the reservoir. Much better than the $500 - $600 for the merc pump.

If anyone has part numbers for actual pump only pumps, please post them here. Thanks.

I have used std auto parts truck units, swapped over the pressure regulator/spring, under the pressure fitting and rolled on...

Roger, when I look up that part number it comes up as a Cardone remanufactured pump. But the only problem is that I do not see a lower mounting stud location on that reservoir.

I got a rebuilt pump (without reservoir) from CarQuest part# 20-661 for $45. It came with new O-rings as well. The casting number on the pump even matched. I used a GM pulley puller/installer that cost $32 and swapped out the pressure regulator and spring as ezstripper said.

I had a p/s pump blow the front seal on my 496, went to Oreillys & found a pump for a 89 chevy Corsica was a direct swap. I had to swap the regulator as stated above and the reservoir fitting, install the pulley & go boating. I think it was around $30.00. Randy
