Default Curious on 280 speeds...???

I've got an 88 280 sport that had 330's in it and I'm dropping in fresh 525sc clones, I'm curious as to what other guys have gotten for top speed and what they were running for power and props....
Part of the reason is because I need to decide whether or not I'm going to have to add hydraulic steering.

Also any input or advise will be greatly appreciated. I only ran the boat a hand full of times and not for long at all. I did like the boat and that's why I decided no throw some more power at it....

I would think with that HP, stock x, and right prop low to maybe mid 80's. I think most will tell you anything over 70 should have hydraulic steering.

Fleg had real good results with the raised x on his 320. So if your looking for all out speed I would look at some shorties. I talked with a guy that had some big power in a 280 once. Said the boat got real squirly after 85 and he was touching 90's. Personally if it was me set it up for a nice cruise speed of 75 and enjoy the ride. Don;t think these boats were designed with all out speed in mind.

Thanks Nightlife1970. Wasn't sure if I'd see that kind of speeds, but yes at those speeds steering will be a must.

Bought an '88 Sport 280 new from Performance Marine in Oxford Ma. Ran it up here on Sebago for 12 seasons, 1000 hrs. Post some pics!
