Default To cut or not to cut? open bow...

I would like to add some extra storage in my open bow on my Powerplay... so since Im re-doing the whole open bow, though it would be a good idea to add a little extra storage in the front middle. Or at least some extra cup holders...

But this got me thinking... why wouldn't they just add it here anyway? This closed for structural purposes? I don't want to make the mistake of cutting this and figure out.. OH SNAP! Thats why...

I could understand advising agains just going at it with a sawzall, but I couldn't see where adding a couple of cup holders would hurt anything. Perhaps you could drill a hole through an adjacent bulkhead and fish a boroscope in there to see what is behind it.
