Unhappy 2 Killed In Boating Accident at Grand Lake

Sad day for the 8 young people on board this open bow. This wreck happened within 1/8th of a mile from our beloved E-Dock. All on board were in their 20's and I'm assuming just starting their summer break from college. The investigation is still ongoing.

Heard that on the radio this morning and I'll be curious to see what the investigation yields.

What a sad thing to see.

That's terrible.

Is that right near a boat launch? Looks very familiar.

Yes they did. They were University of Arkansas students. The girl that passed was a year older than my niece.

I'm still wondering how it would happen during daylight hours on a Tuesday evening with no other traffic.

Grand Lake -
Officials with the Grand River Dam Authority have identified two victims in a fatal boat crash on the lake Tuesday afternoon.

The two killed in the boating accident were identified as Rachel Nicole Swetnam and William Lewis Varner III. Both were passengers of the boat that collided with a docked boat, identified as a Cobalt Bowrider, in the Duck Creek area of the lake Tuesday afternoon.

Justin Alberty with the GRDA stated that Swetnam was from Grove, Oklahoma while Varner lived in Texarkana, Arkansas. Swetnam was a graduate of Cascia Hall.

Brian Edwards with the GRDA Police told KTUL on Tuesday the collision between the Bowrider and the houseboat as a "substantial violent impact."

Cascia Hall Headmaster Roger Carter said he remembers Swetnam as a "wonderful, kind young lady." He added that the news of her death "breaks our hearts."

Carter told KTUL that Swetnam transferred from Tennessee back in January 2009 and remembers her having the "sweetest drawl."

Four other passengers were transported to the Craig General Hospital in Vinita.Their condition is unknown at this time.

The GRDA Police Department is continuing their investigation Wednesday.
