i'm searching for a new vehicle. i would really prefer the diesel but at this point they are just out of my price range
i recently found a V10 model thats 5 grand cheaper than an almost identical diesel. basically i'm looking for the opinions of my fellow OSO members. does anyone have a V10? what do you think? i don't want to turn this into a Ford, Chevy, Dodge thing either. BTW both trucks i have been looking at are 2000 model year. in advance thank you everyone for your input

John Deere Tractors (45 Tractors Now) And Haul Over Loaded Alot.... Engine
And Tranny Have Been Great And I Saved $5,000. But I Have Used Up A Little Of My Savings In Gas.... Milage Is 10-14MPG Over All.... I Pull The Boat (5000lbs) At 70mph And Get 11mpg.... The More Your Foots In It The Worse The Milage Gets

I've got the V-10 in my Excursion, which I bought used. I was also loooking for a diesel, but at the time, I couldn't find one anywhere near me, other than new. As it turned out, I'm glad I got the gas engine. Less noise, less stink, and I can get gas anywhere. My wife also drives it a lot, and I'm sure she wouldn't have been as happy with the diesel.
I'm at just about 36K now, no problems at all, at least since I've owned it. Only downfall of course is the gas mileage. Gets about 10 in town, a few more on the highway. Not a real big deal to us, as I work from home, and I have another car to drive if I chose.
How long do you plan to keep the truck? That seems to one of the big questions in the gas/diesel decision. I've never had a vehicle for more than 3 years, so that's just another reason for me not to pay the $$ for a diesel.
Bottom line is, if someone stole my trcuk, I'd replace it with the exact same thing.

I have 2002, F-250, V-10, Auto, Supercab shortbed.
I love the truck...I have no problems whatsoever, however I have only about 6000 miles on the truck. The engine is plenty powerful and I average about 13mpg in the city with the a/c always on. On the interstate it's a little better.

I have a 2000 with the V10 and 3.73 rear end. I pulled about 6500 lbs when I had my Cobalt and hardly felt it. My new boat is about 7000 lbs on the trailer and I know it's back there. The V10 will pull it at any speed I want with overdrive locked out. The tranny will drop out of overdrive on a slight grade when I apply the petal. This motor wants to pull at 70 - 75 mph, and rewards me with 8.5 miles per gallon.

I am satisfied with the V10 since it's my commute vehicle (2 miles one way), but if I trailered my boat a lot, or went with a bigger boat, I'd have me a Powerstroke.

I have a 99 SD250 with the V-10. I have 42,000 miles on it. It pulls my 10,000 lb boat/trailer no problem. Love the truck and I had the banks system put on it and it is a beast. With that much torque and horsepower added I still gained 1 mpg. I would recommend the truck.

I have a 2000 Excursion and pulled my 38 Cig which is about 13,000 lbs on the trailer down to LOTO 450miles I got 7.5 mpg
There were only a few hills that it struggled on but otherwise it pulled fine. And that was about 3000lbs over weight.

I have a 2000 F250 V10 4x4 cc sb. Love it. Pulls my 9,000 pounds or so fine. I'm not a diesel fan, so I'd never own one, even if they were cheaper. I like it, does the trick. I love the crew cab, too. Gas mileage is around 11 with 3:73's.

CheckmateF1 has the V10 in his F350 Shortbed Crew Cab Dually; with the 4.30 gears; 2WD. He gets 14 unloaded on the highway, and it is a towing monster.

I've got the PSD in my Excursion, and wouldn't have it any other way. That truck is my wifes daily driver and she loves it.

Last week I got over 20 MPG on the highway with it computing the old fashioned way odometer and gallons at the pump, not the little trip computer.

The coin up front is definately tough to take. But if your going to keep the truck the PSD is the way to go. Diesels will long outlive a gasser. I had an xcel file that would tell you the break even point. It seemed to be around 80-100,000 miles. It was based on fuel savings, verse original cost. The V-10 is a great engine but if you are going to keep it look for a diesel. Especially if you do alot of towing.
