Default Planning to repower my 292 Fastech

Hello all,

Has anyone done a repower recently? I am looking to replace my engines and drives without having to do a lot of mod's...I have a 2001 292 Fastech with 140 hours on Merc 350 MPI's (300HP)-I would like to get some more speed, nothing crazy. I am curious as to my best option sticking with Merc, are the Scorpions a direct replacement? Will I need to change mounts etc???

Not sure yet if I will do them in my shop or have someone do it for me, I have not had much luck with getting quality work done in my area so I am leaning on doing it myeself but would appreciate any recommendations on a shop that provides good work-Southern NJ

There is a thread on here from someone who owns a 292 with Scorpions-its a solid 80 MPH boat if I recall. The issue beyond the cost is they require premium fuel. Look at the Illmor 6.2's 420 hp, regular fuel and a lot lighter. The other option is whipple chargers but you will need to do a bit of internal engine work to get the reliability. Either way I'm waiting for someone to pull the trigger and upgrade their power in a 292 as I'd love to do it myself.

I may just go with the 383 strokers from Merc. 350HP but a pretty simple swap out-do the 6.2's fit in there ok? It's tight already! I'll update once I finalize my decision.

I repowered a 292 with carbed 6.2s. Used stock forged crank and powder metal rods put 10 to 1 pistons in and alum heads with comp roller cams. Best thing I ever did. 292 loves the power. You will need hydraulic steering and oil coolers. Starts to get expensive but what don't to go 80mph. Cruise at 55 to 60 and boat planned a lot better. I would stay away from 350hp merc reman 383. You will not see a lot of gain over 350 mags. The 400hp version is the way to go has scorpion intake and injection. That motor should put boat in high 70s. I would not supercharge 350 mag because of hypereutecic pistons. If you get detonation these pistons will destroy them selfs in a hurry. I know from experience.

I will look into the 6.2's more-any reason you went NA instead of injection??? Thx for the input!

Stock intakes on 6.2s/350mags are restrictive. Was told about 350 to 375hp max and computer is hard to hack. Only a few guys can tune it. I did not have money to spend on scorpion injection so went with big Es air gap intake and qwikfuel carbs. Only time I ever miss injection is when motors are cold. But after that carbs tuned right work great. It has been proven that a carb motor will make more HP than injection will but in real world with weather changes injection will shine on hot muggy days.

RV-that is some pretty work-congrats, I'm with you on the carbs-Im building a 445CI SBF for my Cobra kit now and am going the NA route even though I could have gone with stack injection. Dynoed it last week with a Holley HP950 but didn't like the Air/Fuel ratios enough, my carb guy built a Quickfuel based on the data from the dyno so it goes back on tomorrow-last session it made 651HP @ 6700 & 581 LB @ 4600, hoping for more with the new carb and then it goes into my 2300# car!

I can't even find the 400HP Mercs-I called techline and they said only 350 HP now??? I agree that it aint worth the extra 50 HP, these engines only have 140 hours I can pull them and pretty ev thing up and save a lot of cabbage. What drives/props are you running?

mercury does not make the 400 horsepower scorpions anymore I have thought about building 2 427 small blocks with the dart heads would make a really nice boat but not sure I want to spend 30 grand
