is a stock sbc roller lifter (98 350 mag) the same as a stock bbc roller lifter (98 454)? I have one of each side by side and I see no difference

so far I have figured out that the older flat tappet lifters are the same between both sbc and bbc. I am also seeing allot of stuff saying that the only thing different on the rollers is the tie bars, these are dog bone style so that makes no difference. if I put these side by side I see absolutely nothing different, the width, height, roller size and everything I can see looks identical. I cant find anything online anywhere that confirms one way or another. the stock mercruiser part numbers are different and is the only thing telling me that they may not be the same

From what I know the bodies are the same. Like you observed the link bars are different. Here is a link to comp cams that show the height and dia being the same

these are the stock dog bone style so there are no link bars

I figured it out, I don't recall of the top of my head which is which but one lifter has the slots on top and bottom and the other has them on the sides. they are identical in every other way though. so they do not interchange

if these are roller s you are looking at, notching for the dog bone is 90 off
