Default Old School 425 hp Coupler Question

1 how do you know if a coupler is bad (it is triangular with springs in it)
2 this is a 425 hp big block to a trans linked to #3 drives (early to mid 80's) no one seems to know what these are or where to get them, anyone have a part number and price for these, or if they are good or bad....therse were on a running boat up untill the engines were blown due to a wrist pin walking out and eating the cylinders, but these may be origional

I cannot see any part numbers on these
