Default question about fiberglass in transom

engines out different repairs, naturally you cant remove engine and inner transom plate without having a scary look around on a 1991 boat. What I found is above the drain plug exterior is a crack, well that got me thinking, and while looking at inner trasom I found some cracked inner trasom fiberglass that probably led to the exterior fracture crack. My question is this, I check the rest of trasom, its solid, and surprisingly dry.

so basically the first four to six inches, up from bottom of haul of boat has seen water behind the fiberglass at some point, and i think froze and cracked or however that delamination process starts and proceeds, well my question is and i know its gonna need fixed but question is shouldnt i be able to get through the season without worry
of the outdrive falling off. like is said i checked the rest of transom and it all APPEARS and feels solid using several hammer taps and a protimiter, which masures moisture content in anything solid.

I have pictures for reference, and im thick skinned so let me know restoration guys, i want to get out on lake this year but be safe doing it, and again i know what the end answer is,, m questions references the season at hand.

i can send photos from my email if you provide me your email. for some reason it wont let me post pics on here. what im wanting to do is lay so layers of glass over inner cracked glass and roll with it for season, i know its not a fix, but im looking to get out on water. think it would be ok for season or whats left.

It could be cracked from freezing but it could be cracked from being rotten and the drive torque. When you plane off the drive is going to be pulling out on the transom at the top and pushing in on the bottom, which is probably more likely. You may as well fix the transom while you have the engine out.

My transom was wet when I bought my boat, spent at least 2 winters stored cold and I never had any cracks from it freezing.

Here is a tutorial on how to post pictures to a forum, when you aren't a paying member:

You got the response that is correct and within a few hours of posting. Why keep responding?

You should have posted the question in the fiberglass forum.

My boat is old and was an inexpensive project to get in to (quickly getting pricey now. Lol ) and I get lots of help when asking.

Maybe become a supporting member would help as well.

Good luck with your project.

At the expense of upsetting someone that wants to help, let me ask you one question.

Are you willing to risk your boat sinking with someone else on board?

I've cut corners with a few things in my life, safety on the water is not one of those things. If you are asking the question here, you already know the answer in the back of your mind.

Replace the whole transom. Demo will take a little more time, construction is virtually the same, the expense will be close enough and you won't worry about durability when your loved ones are on board.

That's good advice. Every time I was out in mine after I knew the transom was wet, I would wonder if this is the time it's going to break and sink. It's not like a car, you can't get out and walk over to the side of the road.
