50' Nor-tech cat - Wow!
#1
For years Chris at Ocean Performance in CT has had a 50' Nor-tech cat sitting. I had mumblings about what seemed like an extremely low asking price (I don't recall ever seeing the cat listed for sale anywhere, but I believe it is). Over the years I heard rumors from many people that this boat, or these boats in general, had issues... which having never really inspected the boat or even seen it run, I assumed could be true. About a year ago a friend (who's known to be about as cheap as they come) was talking about working out a deal on this boat and I had a chance to quickly look over the boat. The boat was far cleaner and nicer than I had imagined. It has a real head, couch, and a queen size bed to boot. He managed to fire up the low hour 705 ci detuned engines and they idled well, but the boat never left the yard. Apparently the deal fell through and the Nor-tech was wrapped back up for storage. Again, while I'm sure the deal fell through related to money, I again had to wonder if there really was something wrong with this boat given the numbers I heard being tossed around.
Fast forward to last weekend. After having the boat sitting for so long and not getting any use out of it, Ocean Performance decided to run it in the NPBA OS poker run. The guys were nice enough to invite me (after 2 or 3 fools declined) even though I don't spend much money there. The invitation came with the understanding that it could be a short day since the boat had sat for so long. No problem, I do my best (or should I say most of my) boating on other people's boats, haha!
I had a chance to again quickly look around at this 50' monster and saw nothing but what looked like a very clean, low hour, and lightly used boat. One engine was a little rough off idle, but the problem was traced back to some water in the fuel and we were able to work through it. Other than that, it ran great. No funny noises, good oil pressure, water temps, ect. With a six man sausage-fest aboard (all of us 200+ lbs), Chris ran the first half of the run at a conservative 3500-4000 rpm in what seemed like mostly 2' or less conditions. I say seemed because this boat makes everything seem small! The boat did nothing odd and quite frankly was rather boring running 75-80 mph in those conditions. No hop no nothing, kind of like sitting in a pickup truck on a dirt road, just a little bump here and there. Only once did the boat come out of the water, but that was after Chris launched it good off the back of a cruiser wake and the big cat laughed at it as to say "is that all you have for me???" This cat is perfectly happy in or out of the water!
On the return trip leaving Montauk, conditions weren't so smooth. I honestly wasn't really looking at the water conditions, but judging by the typical 35-40 vee bottoms in the field and the way they were hopping up and down, in and out of the water, conditions had to be real 2'-4' with some much deeper holes mixed in here and there. The entire field left well before we did, and once again Chris settled the sticks at around 3800-4000 rpm and just let the boat cruise. One by one we started walking through a good portion of the field, and that was not pushing the boat even remotely. Remember, the field had left minutes ahead. Maybe 5-10 times did the boat have to be slightly throttled, it just eat everything with absolutely no drama! As we got well into LIS, conditions calmed down to 1' or less. Again drama free, but as we got close to home Chris decided to push the sticks forward a little more and it wasn't long before the six 200+ lb swinging di@ks (with 1/2 tanks of fuel) were running at 100 mph with more left to go. Once again, drama free and running like it was on rails, no ill manors at all.
So not only did the boat not have any physical or mechanical issues, but it also had nothing but perfect manors. I've been on plenty of Skaters etc, and this boat ran every bit as well, but without the traditional pod-less hop. For all those people mumbling rumors about this cat or any other 50' Nor-tech cat out there, I certainly didn't see ANY issues with this big cat! Well, other than everything is almost too drama-free! It will run through just about anything with ease and embarrass most other offshores when things start getting rough. Around the docks it was certainly an attention getter as well.
I'm not here to try to sell this boat, but honestly... if I didn't need a boat I could frequently trailer, I would buy this boat in a heartbeat. It's a monster and I can't imagine more offshore boat for the dollar! If someone wants to be a really "big deal" without breaking the bank, this is without a doubt the boat for you!
Thanks again to the folks at Ocean Performance for having us, and a huge thank you for giving us the opportunity to experience this 50' monster... I'm hear to tell the naysayers, there is nothing wrong with this 50' Nor-tech cat! With any luck maybe one of the guys will post a picture/video or two of the Nor-tech...

Scot, very well put, I've been trying to find the time for 2 days now to express the same. The boat is unbelievable! And ran SO WELL! Honestly I brought a spare fuel pump, distributor, msd box, coil and other misc, we only opened the hatches for inspection and found nothing! The boat and the o/p crew treated us well on that run! The number this boats available at makes it a no brainer for someone that has water access or wants to put a huge lift in a slip!

Scot some of us are still hanging on to the high 190's, with that being said that boat is friggin big and cool. I have only been on a hand full of cats but it is crazy how this thing just laughed at any water, after 75 mph it is a different boat it amazed me. Here is a quick shot.

Oh, and I have known Chris and the crew at OP for several years. They truly are are good people.
