Verado HD 5,4 dia gearcase vs standard 4,8 dia - speed difference?
Hi!
I hope you all are well.
I have a Phantom 25 with a Verado 350 sci. It runs very well, between 81-82 mph with a reworked Rev4 25 at 6,500 rpms. Which is good for a 30 years hull
However, I know the big HD 5,4 dia gearcase slows me down. Have anyone of you compared the HD 5,4 gearcase with the 4,8 gearcase Verado 300 Pro use?
I wonder if I should buy a Pro 4,8 gearcase, and gain some mph .
Cheers and thanks, Toffen

Hi!
Thanks
Is the way to it to buy a 25 inch driveshaft, cut it down to 20, and respline? Will the respline be as strong as the original ? My top speed will be approx 85 mph so a Torque master will be the trick
Cheers Toffen
Thanks

yep... That sounds about right my 39 nortech with the big lowers is around 2 mph slower then the standard lower. I would really love to get those 2 mph's back..

Not sure exactly what was involved with the change over, however I do know it required a change of vertical shafts.
The gear case is probably only worth 2-3mph if you take handling out of the equation. But that hydraulic steering is a handful on those verado's so swapping to the sporty improved the handling 10 fold. That's where the other 1-2mph comes from in my opinion.

Hi,
Thanks Kurt
Thats interesting.
Verado use smaller splines than the Optimax 300 xs or Promax 300 do. So I have found out that people cut down a 25 inch to fit the 20 inch, and respline it.
Can you ask your friend if his Sportmaster has a torque tab built in such as Torquemaster gearcase has, or if its a straight skeg? Can you also ask him if he need much positive trim at WOT, or if he runs closer to neutral?
Its very important that the steering system on the 350 sci is bleeded properly. I could not understand why my top speed dropped 1,5 mph this year. Aha, I thought. Maybe its slack in the steering, and I bleeded it several times. Bang, and I gained in fact 2 mph instantly.
Its much easier to find a Sportmaster than a Torquemaster, so I will look into that.
Cheeers, Toffen
