Douglas Marine and Arneson Surface Drives CONGRATULATES Tyson Garvin and Chris Fertig on setting the New York City to Bermuda Speed Record!!
Yesterday, August 21, 2013 there as an attempt on the speed record from New York City to Bermuda. Chris Fertig and Tyson Garvin crossed the finish line at 12:39 a.m. ADT, setting a new record of 15 hours and 48 minutes. It was previously held by Fabio Buzzi since September of last year.
Two Americans, Tyson Garvin and Chris Fertig, piloted a 40' Douglas Marine Skater V Bottoms with twin Cummins QSB 5.9 480 hp engines with a set of ZF 2 Speed transmissions coupled to twin Arneson ASD8 In Line Drive Units assaulted the previous record held by Fabio Buzzi of Italy besting the record by 1 hour and 18 minutes. Despite several propeller breakages, changes and limping the last 100+ miles on one good propeller and one broken propeller the Americans recaptured the record from the Italians.
This was the American’s second attempt and capture of the distance record which established a new record of 15 hours and 48 minutes, besting Buzzi's record of 17 hours 6 minutes.

They made the best of what they had at their disposal so it's all good as they set and regained the record. I have not spoken with Tyson yet so I don't know for certain what his thoughts are but there is a lot of time left on the table with this boat and that event.
Given he knows to a T what fuel load he had remaining in the boat he might do things a bit differently if he has to attempt this in the future again. They will be trying a record run from Key West to Cancun and this is a good test for the fuel burn, loads and such so there are a lot of positives to take away from this run.
Side note, I have no idea how that boat is going to get back to the States from Bermuda. Had they had a supply of propellers they could have added more fuel and ran back to a different location setting another record. Without propellers flat decking this to a cargo ship takes a long time.
