hi guys,
Im looking at these two boats right now and have heard lots of positive things about the scarab 22 except for the wooden floors that tend to go. i know checkmate makes great boats too but im having a harder time finding info and what to look for in them.
The boat will be run on a large freshwater lake near montreal. both are down to about 12k$
let me know whay you guys think or things to look for on these particular models.

Gotta figure how you want to use the boat. Scarab is a sit down, Checkmate sit/stand. Scarab has a birth to lay in, Checkmate full cuddy? Scarab has a 330 hp motor? Checkmate 385?
I had a 96 22 Scarab I bought new. It was fun boat for ripping around in. Handled very well for what it was. Never had any build quality issues other than stripping one of the screw adjustment handles for the seat swivel/slide.

The Checkmate looks like it has been repainted and some interior work done. The repaint looks great but Checkmates come from the factory with all the color in the gelcoat and many would worry why the painting need to happen(neglect). The interior work does not look to be of as high a standard.
If the pictures are recent the Scarab looks like a great original condition boat.
If you prefer the Checkmate style and function I would keep looking to find one in better condition.

I love my 22 Scarab and although not ideal I do stay weekends on it very often. I was looking at many different boats in the 10-15k range this spring and chose my Scarab due to the condition it was in. My boat doesnt ride to bad in the chop/rough but I also have Bennet trim tabs that seem to reall help smooth out the waves. Good luck in your choice!

I'm selling a 2000 237 Powerquest (200 hrs) for 16k ... The condition of this boat would blow those two away

Does it get rough?
Being you said its a big lake im sure it does/has the ability to, based on that I would chose the Checkmate over the Scarab (although I may be biased) but being a stand up boat vs the sit down Scarab thats a win right there. I drive standing up 100% of the time anyway, and I couldnt imagine HAVING to sit down and drive...especially if it gets rough.
Never been in one before, but that^^ PowerQuest looks CLEAN and would be worth a look.

No contest, the checkmate for one reason: Stand up. When you launch of waves, the ability to absorb the shock with your legs is a must. That being said... Stretch for the powerquest by miles. It's going to be a little better built and a smoother, more trouble free ride.
