Default Taping off gelcoat

So i am going to try to re gel a older boat, where i am caught up is the tape..That is how do i lay or spray three layer's of gel the tape is far to thin to create a edge. I intend to get the gel about the thickness of a dime or is this just crazy thinking. Recently i patched up some large area's on a boat by spraying and was a bit taken back how good it came out and how easy the prep was compared to paint...Yes sanding is a ***** but i have 3 high school kids who want to go to college and sweat equity will be there ticket there..seem's more than fair to me.

lol, nothing like cheap help.

if i am gelling up to an edge or corner i sand the radius in 220 or 320 and if it something like the edge at the hard chine i just hard line it and sand it off later when i am finalizing the finish. It will be lost on the radius when buffed out.I start by taping about a half inch or so off the edge then mask everything off then go do the final line at the edge this way i can pull the single piece of tape when the gel is still wet. you dont want to let gel cure over a tape line if you can help it.

Are you using a waxed gel or Duratech? White over white? Complete surface or a section?

The project would be something like this...

To this

The boat is a 87 intruder its dry as a bone just needs some luv. Painting will require far to much fairing for my taste.... glass that old has a lot of wave and i get the ocd going.. things just get out of control. I learned gel is very forgiving and damm strong actually.Odd is it not when painting one wants the thin line's now with gel won wants thick edge's or so i think.....By removing the tape prior to cure that means retaping again and again,,

As to gel..well i went down to tap plastic's and picked up some of there house brand used mekp as a hardener and blew it on the boat. A very fine sand pattern was left and wet sanded down quite easily color match was almost perfect and it has lasted two yrs now and the kids are not easy on it at all.

It gets tricky when you try and do multiple colors. It does not tape like paint and best to not let it cure on the tape edge, just by its nature it is very thick. Duratech gloss additive makes it spray and sand much easier but make the color somewhat opaque and when changing color it can take extra coats. It does spray much nicer though.

I can see you understand my delemina giving up trade secret's is a *****...how about a hint or pm. As to establishing a line of color... I cant believe in pulling a tape line each shot that's insane.
