Default Chevy 3500 or 2500 for towing a 35 Fountain?

I was just wondering because I would like to get the truck before I ever upgrade to the 35 Fountain.

I'm sorry I changed my mind. I like the styling more. Easier to work on the engines. It's heavier in dealing with the waves. It's also longer. This way I wont want to jump in length. The 35 Fountain would be the absolute max. size for me.

A 2500 will do fine. The 3500 is a dually and that has all kids of ramifcations. A dually is near impossible to use in a drive thru bank, etc. Your real question is gas or diesel. Diesel will give you all the power you need and then some. The gas will do the trick though too. Used 2500's in the newer body style (2009 or later) with a Dmax are available for around 40k in really good condition. BUt you gotta look hard. New they are really pricey - around 55-60.

Just get the big block or diesel. 6.0 would be weak for towing that. I have an old rat with a 496 and allison pulls the boat good, just loves its fuel.

A good friend of mine has towed one with a 2500 chevy 6.0 gas for a long time, does fine just won't win any drag races. I bought a 2500 suburban with the 496 and 4.10's for when I get a 35 fountain.
How much towing and the type of towing you do will have a lot to do with the truck you pick. Me and my friend are usually local with few long distance heavy loaded trips. If you do a lot of those then a stronger truck should be looked at.

I would go with 4x4 either way, I used to have a ford 460 dually 2wd that would pull down the road but not up a ramp. My 3500 chevy duramax pulls great & is very stable in a crosswind. I just don't use the drive thru ANYTHING. Lol Randy

2500 will ride better when your not towing, but might need some air bags added to the rear. Used a friends 05 3500 dually to tow a 38' cat 400 miles a couple months back. With no engines it tipped the scales at 10,200 and that's equals a good bit of tongue weight. His truck had air bags, once aired up to 80psi it rode great.

Hooked that same boat up to my F250 for a short 15 mile trip and realized air bags would be a must on 3/4 ton. For engines, Duramax is gonna get much better mileage with or without a load. Plus you can put adjustable tunes on it pretty cheap that will give ya all the power you need, when you need it. I'm a Ford guy, but I love that 6.6L Duramax.
