Attending Captains should read this information carefully to minimize any confusion.
Our fun run to Harpoon Harry's at Fisherman's Village in Punta Gorda is one of two fund raising events we have each year to help fund our Ft. Myers Offshore, Inc. student scholarship program.
If you are planning on attending this event please let me know by 3 PM on Wednesday Nov. 27th as the restaurant must order our food in advance. You may e mail me at [email protected] or post up on this OSO Ft. Myers Offshore event thread. I will only need a boat count as we have gotten pretty good at estimating total number of people based on the number of boats. If your boat is down for service or repair and you feel like driving to Harpoon Harry’s to join us for lunch, club members are most welcome to do so. Please let me know as well so we can make sure there is sufficient food.
We are asking that each participating boat donate a minimum $100.00 ( more at your discretion ) towards this cause. The preferred method of payment if you have a PayPal account is to go to our website at www.ftmyersoffshore.org , click on “ Events “ where you will see a pay button for this event. Alternatively we can take cash or a check made out to FMO at the lunch stop. In addition we will be selling 50/50 raffle tickets at lunch as well as club shirts and hats etc. as part of our fund raising efforts. Come out and have a great day on the water and lets show our support for worthy Lee and Collier County students in need of financial help to enter university or college. FMO has provided over $ 80,000.00 in assitance to dozens of students since we began our program.
Membership information / renewal:
All vessels participating in FMO events are required to carry insurance and have a club membership. Memberships are on a calendar year basis and if you have not yet renewed your membership for 2013, or are new and wanting to join the club, you may do so online. Please go to www.ftmyersoffshore.com and click on “Membership”. It can all be done online including payment or alternatively you may also renew at any event during the lunch stop or download the membership application at the top of the websites “Membership” page and mail it in. Even when renewing early, your membership will be good through until Dec. 31, 2014. People tell me all the time what a great thing FMO has going on here and it can only continue if you continue to show support for your club. If your boat insurance info has not been provided online it should then be e mailed to either me at [email protected] or to FMO board member Eric Belisle [email protected] who is tracking that on behalf of the club.
Route:
Our starting point will once again be the south side of the Sanibel Bridge. Boats should assemble around 10:45 am and we will leave by 11:00 AM sharp.
We will be divided into two groups for the start, according to speed. Group 1 will be boats capable of cruising at more than 60 MPH wanting to run offshore and Group 2 will be those boats capable of cruising at 50 - 60 MPH and will be travelling up the Intra Coastal Waterway ( ICW ). I will designate a pace boat for Group 1 ( offshore ) and I will be the pace boat in my Renegade for Group 2 ( ICW ). When we meet south of the Sanibel Bridge we should gather in 2 distinct separate groups to avoid confusion with the 2 starts. Each paceboat will be flying a flag.
Group 1 ( offshore ) will be boats capable of cruising at more than 60 MPH wanting to run offshore and will start first. Group 2 should hold its position for a few minutes until after Group 1 has left. When this group starts, they will head south into San Carlos Bay making a wide sweep around the bottom end of Sanibel Island ( do not cut the corner as this part of San Carlos Bay is shallow), eventually going west into the Gulf and then up the coast staying a mile or more offshore. They will make their way off the Gulf and into Charlotte Harbor via Boca Grande Pass and on up Charlotte Harbor to Fisherman's Village in Punta Gorda. If the seas are too rough, then the alternate route will be to run up the ICW with Group 2. We should all be there by 12:00 p.m or shortly after for lunch. We will be docking along the wall on the south side of Fisherman's Village. There will be some rafting so please be sure to bring your fenders.
Group 2 ( ICW ) I will be the pace boat in my Renegade for this group and will lead the boats up the ICW to Charlotte Harbor and on up to Punta Gorda. It is OK to pass the paceboat once the flag has been dropped. Just make sure you know your way and stay within the marked channel. Also please be aware that the ICW can be busy especially on a holiday weekend and we need to respect others using the waterway giving them a wide berth.
Fuel / Distance:
From the Sanibel Bridge to Punta Gorda and back should be about 110 miles for those running offshore and 100 miles by way of the ICW. Fuel is available at Punta Gorda Marina, Fisherman’s Village Marina in Punta Gorda and Jensen’s Marina on Pine Island Sound. 93 octane is very difficult to find these days so please leave with a full tank if you require high octane fuel.
Food:
We will be eating upstairs at the Captain’s Table above Harpoon Harry's. They will be serving us a plated lunch with a choice of prime rib or chicken marsala with a house salad, rolls, mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables. We will be served assorted dessert with soda’s, coffee, tea, water. Mmmmmm looks like Thanksgiving all over again !!
Adults : $25.00 with tax & gratuity included. Kids half price
Downstairs, Harpoon Harry's will be playing the football games on their big screen TV's so no need to rush off after lunch unless you need to.
Communication:
Inter boat communication to be on VHF channel 72. My cell number is 239 776 0481. Anyone dropping out after the start should let me know so we do not spend time either waiting or looking for you. Leave a voicemail if no answer.
Pictures:
Club photographer Jay Nichols ( NaplesImage.com ) will be overhead in a helicopter getting aerial shots of the boats. Jay will shoot the offshore group first then pick up the ICW group after that. Since Jay does not normally sell enough pictures to cover the helicopter as well as his processing and printing costs, we need to help him with this expense. To offset some costs, Jay will offer the seat next to the helicopter pilot for $ 300.00. ( 180 lb max I believe, to be confirmed ) That is very reasonable for what will be almost a 1.5 hour ride out of the Naples airport. Please let me know if you are interested in the helicopter ride.
In addition, any Captain willing to contribute $ 100 towards the helicopter will get a 16” X 24” picture included from Jay. Sometimes the field gets so scattered Jay cannot capture all the boats and if your boat is not pictured, there is no obligation to pay. Try not to run away from the helicopter until after he has your picture ! Remember his camera cannot tell if you are running 50 or 150.

Efficiency is important, especially when shooting a fast group...
IF, and I use the term loosely...
If you guys could hold steady at around 80 for a few miles it is much easier to get everyone if all are going about the same speed.
(I am not asking anyone to slow down here..
)
Just a thought... please spread the word to everyone.
