Default machine standard bravo lower gears to work with XR prop shaft?

After inspecting my XR lower I found a few chipped teeth. This was a used set of gears that I put about 100hrs on. I have a good used set of standard bravo lower gears. Can I take the driven gear to a machine shop and have it honed out to accept the XR prop shaft? Both sets have the same numbers stamped into them so I assume this is all that mercury does to them.
Thanks for the help

The gears are hardened, so it would need to be ground with a stone or cut with a ceramic tool. Problem is trying to grasp the gear, so it was centered to get an accurate cut.
Another solution would be to cut down the splines on the propshaft so it fits the B1 gears. Several others that offer propshafts have the splines cut down to use the B1 gears.
Just a thought. Hope it helps.

The casting number on the gears are the same. I don't believe there is any difference accept the size of the bore before the splines on the driven (propshaft) gear. I may be wrong, but the casting numbers kind of give it away. I can't imagine they have any different magic for one or the other. Just my .02

I've been using std Bravo gears on my XR Sportmasters, as mentioned, the gear is very hard, I had the prop shaft turned down to fit the Bravo gear. -If I remember correctly, the XR shaft is .070 thicker where they slip on.

Ditto on turning down the propshaft. Done it for years, make sure you have a machinist put a small radius at the shoulder.

Now the prop shaft is larger,Can that just be machined down on a lathe or does it need machine ground .Is the drive shaft going to the upper larger. If it is does the bravo gear fit that or is work involved there also. I know the bearing carrier is different for the prop shaft. Thanks JOHN SR

John,
The shaft can be turned in a lathe, it is soft enough. The upper vertical shaft will fit the pinion gear, there is no difference in the pinion between the B1 and XR. The bearing carrier race and the tapered bearing on the shaft is larger for the XR shaft. I hope that answers your questions.
