Default surface drives on scarab

looking at building an old 377 scarab but changing it around and making it look sweet for a fun wave crusher. theres one for sale cheap near me. i was thinking about ditching the TRS and do surface drives but cannot justify the price for ASD 8's... are there older/ cheaper styles that would work for this purpose? only twin 502's not big power...

You would not need the ASD8's as they would be like putting Mercury's largest drive on the boat. All you need is the Arneson #7M Drives.
