World Championships To Stay in Key West, Florida in 2014
Key West (December 19, 2013) – Super Boat International (SBI) announces the 34th Annual Key West World Championship’s will be held in Key West November 2nd – 9th, 2014. Members of SBI, Conch Republic Offshore Powerboat Racing Association (CROPRA) and city representatives met today to confirm next year’s event will stay in Key West.
“CROPRA has agreed and will seek financial committees and assistance from the community to refine the financial obligations to bring forward the races in 2014 and beyond," comments Larry Bleil, President of CROPRA. All of the members present at today’s meeting expressed the need to make the event happen and to continue helping the retail service people of Key West.
John Carbonell, President of SBI comments on the recent support they have received. “I am happy that everything worked out today. We have received a lot of support from the City of Key West and from CROPRA. They are committed to increase sponsorship dollars and make the World Championships another successful event. We believe we are moving in a positive direction for this coming year and the future.”
“The Key West World Championship race is here for 2014 and a deal is pending for a total 5 years,” commented City Manager, Bob Vitas. Carbonell feels this commitment by the City Manager’s team and CROPRA is proof how important this event is to Key West.
City Commissioner, Mark Rossi commented, “I am very happy all organizations are working together, not only to have this event stay here, but stay for a long time. Everyone seems to be working closely together.” Commissioner Rossi and the City Manager, Vitas, discussed the upcoming plans for the Truman Waterfront property and highlighted the plans for phase 1. The changes coming in 2014 would pose limited obstruction for the race site.
“We have been looking at other sites, specifically Clearwater, and Frank Chivas (Clearwater Promoter) has been very supportive for the people involved in the Key West discussions. Chivas comments, “I have the upmost respect for the Key West World’s and those involved and if the Worlds can’t be in Key West, Florida… we want it here in Clearwater.”
Carbonell continued, “This event is very important to the city and county and we feel that this site is as equally important to our fans and race teams. We are committed through 2014 and hopefully beyond. It’s up to CROPRA and the city to meet the financial expectations and commitments set forth in today’s meeting that will help secure our commitment for future years.” No financial terms and obligations are available at this time.
