Well, I finally chose a new headunit. Let the fun begin.
Right now I removed a 1990 SONY tape deck with the knobs. My plan is to use the new single DIN template and with a coping saw carefully cut the dash to hold my new DIN.
it's a Clarion M303. I plan to be able to stream bluetooth music from my iphone, or plug in say a 4GB drive w/all my music.
May also add Sirius to it
I'll take pics and let you all know how it goes...
Right now I'm starting w/the headunit. Eventually will be new speakers amp, and a sub...

One of the best things to cut fiberglass with is a rotary tool like a RotoZip or one of the other brands that makes one similar. If you use such a tool, you have to go fast enough not to smoke/burn the material, yet slow enough that you don't put too much stress on the cutting bit and break it. Use a bit for cutting tile if you can find them as they are stronger than the wood bits.
Good luck with your project.

CLARION!!!!
Good choice. That is what I put in my boat too! I have all the same attachments like ipod, Sirius and dvd etc. I put a flat screen in the cuddy as well and hooked it up to the six speaker system I have.
The only thing I didn't buy was the remote head volume control head. I think I will get it this year and place it near the back of the boat probably in the radar arch or near the swim platform.

well, looks like my project just got bigger. I ordered the Clarion digital amp for my main 4 speakers, and am thinking about a sub now too...
When it's complete I plan on having 6 speakers + sub. the front two speakers are under the cuddy; and will be powered by the head unit. the other 4 will be powered by this amp.
All will be Sony 6.5" speakers. - Sony XS-MP1621
Amp - Clarion XC1410
Potential Sub & amp -
Kenwood Marine Bass Package
Includes KFC-W250MRW 10" marine subwoofer and KAC-210MR amplifier (White KFC-W250MRW subwoofer)
I hooked up the M303 to a 12v battery and some old speakers, linked it to my iphone for fun, and WOW this thing is cool.... Pandora right from the iphone. sound was loud and clear - even with crap speakers!
They sent me a code for a $40 SIRIUS tuner, and since I love my Sirius (and own 2,000 shares) so I bought it. I called Sirius, and asked ... well, do you have any "summer" plans.. they said no, I said well, I don't want to pay activation every year... they said they'd waive it, and note the account... we shall see this summer!
Before you drill and run the wiring; have you seen the RF remote? You don't have to point it at the receiver... it's waterproof... and FLOATS.
how cool is that?
Remote - Clarion MF1
Ohh, and throw in me setting up a dual battery setup while I'm at it... Fun Stuff.

installed 2 of the new speakers + amp. waiting for the next amp to finalize the wiring, and some new RCA splitters... as well as the next 4 speakers.
Drilled the new holes for the new speakers... 5" round holes in fiberglass is scary and messy... I forgot how much i hate raw fiberglass or fiberglass insulation... redoing my garage is killing me...
anyway; the new speakers + AMP is AMAZING. even just the 2 speakers POUND. I am very happy w/the sound, the way the look, everything. Pandora and mp3s work great streaming from my iphone.
the Sirius Tuner arrives tonight.... so I'll be in the garage installing that while testing the furnace which has frozen shut on me so many times I may have to relocate it from the attic space to garage heated space.. UGH.
I can't say enough good about the digital amps of now... they are 1/4 the size and use like 10 or 12 gauge wire... no need to run 2 gauge to these things!
analog amps are, at best, 50% effecent... 1/2 the power goes to HEAT... digital amps are much better at turning power into music...
the amp is so small it's bolted up under my dash. it's amazing the differnce between the headunit out (17 watts RMS)... which, sounds... GOOD... and the 50 watts RMS of the real amp... which sounds... WOW. these speakers can do the bass and highs!
Where's the upload photos button?!
I also rewired my depth finder to be on/off with all the other gauges, and moved the radio to the ACC switch on the dash - easier to turn on/off.
