Default Mercruiser 383 and Alpha one?

Can I just drop this engine in in place of my 5.0??? Can you just take the impeller out of the out drive and let the water pump at the base of the engine handle the cooling like a bravo or will it not work through an Anpha

I have been told the water hose in the gimbal housing on Alphas is meant to be used under pressure not suction. With an engine mounted pump you could end up pinching the hose and starving the motor for water. You could pull the impeller out, cap the outlet in the engine compartment, and install a through hull pickup.

If you really want a 383 just buy a long block and swap the accessories off the 305 on it and go.

The alpha impeller will be fine to feed water up to the pump.

In the pic it shows the shifter plate on the riser. Dont forget to put in your shift interupter switch for use with an alpha.

So choice A is keep the impeller in the alpha and keep water pump on motor..2 pumps.. Choice B is remove water pump on 383 and just rely on alpha. Choice C is cap alpha and go through hull.. Any suggestions on choice.. Pro or con.

I would run the Bravo pump on the motor with the through hull fitting. Then you dont have to split the drive anymore to service the impeller.

I helped a friend do it the hose from the transom would collapse. Took the impeller out of the outdrive it would still collapse. Either run the alpha impeller only, change to a reinforced hose or run a direct thru hull pickup. Basically an alpha hose wont run under suction

Another choice is to take the same money, build a 383 and replace the Alpha set up with a Bravo Transom Assembly and Bravo I drive. Then you will have everything set up as it should be. You might even be able to do it for less.
