All great points. Here's another one to think about though: Where (in the fleet you picked) do you run. Most fleets start out pretty well organized and spread out from left to right behind the Pace Boat - assuming you have one of those. I generally say that the four safest positions are immediately left and right of the Pace Boat, then all the way out on the wings either side of the Pace Boat.
The positions immediately left and right of the Pace Boat are good because it's pretty hard to get squeezed any closer together when you're right beside the boat that's controlling the whole fleet. Getting squeezed usually leads to backing off (which leads to eating wakes), or hitting the throttles (which leads to its own problems.) Speaking of getting squeezed, that's what is wrong with all of the other positions (moving outward) except for the wing position. In fact, if you've never run in a Poker Run before, that's the very best place to run. If you feel uncomfortable, you can always move out. Better yet, if you keep up. you'll never eat wakes.
