Hi Rune,
Anything on Front Street will have a race view. The rates will start in the $500 range (for pool or garden view, not ocean view).
You can always walk to the viewing area & stay a bit away from Front Street. I think a Bed & Breakfast is a nice option.
The web sites usually include a map so you can see how far you will be from everything downtown.
Try to stay near downtown - not Roosevelt (lower prices out there though).

I can tell you one place not to stay. LaConcha on Duvall. Absolutely the worst place I've stayed. Rooms are SMALL, workers are rude (besides the bell hops), food sucks. And hide your Rolex if you leave it in your room.
It was also really nice that they decided to remodel during the races last year and not tell anyone.

We stay at the westin. It is front row for the races, a short walk to everything, race pits, poker run village and nightlife. Expect to pay $800 a night for ocean front/view. All hotels in KW double or triple their rates that week.
