Default How fast is your boat..... says the insurance company

Just curious, everyone lies about how fast their boat is on the fast side when talking with buddies but what do you do with the insurance quote? Not really a time to brag?

Just curious in a real world scenario, if you have a boat that goes 100 but tell them it goes 80... When they pull up the wreckage and see you have this part, this drive and so forth and say you lied about speed.

I mean, what if you have a hull loss going 20... seems like insurance companies are always looking at fraud and reasons NOT to pay.

Anyone had any bad experiences with stuff like this?

I was told horse power is more important than speed, always make sure horsepower is listed in the policy.

Stacy listed 75mph on my boat when I told her I would be lucky to hit 70 with a tail wind, running on fumes, stars aligned, 40 degree weather and a 2ft chop.

She mentioned that you did not want to have a claim and upon inspection, the insurance denies your claim b/c your speed estimate was understated. I agreed, a technicality in not paying off a claim would suck!!!

+1.. The horsepower is what they base the premium on. Don't understate top speed by more than 10%.

it goes in brackets 114 mph and below would be a different price than 114 and above

I was very open and honest about my horsepower on a previous boat owned. It had mild BBC non-merc engines. It saved my azz when I had a engine fire, cause the insurance company tried to block the claim. Not worth the headaches if you do have a claim.

Good thoughts, thanks.

So now I'll ask, what if you say your HP is 500 and in reality it's 600?

I guess honesty is the best policy.. (best guess)

+1. Here is the order my guy at all state asked besides what boat it is.

What engine do you have and how much HP? I said 502 mag efi, 415hp.
How much do you think it is worth, and how much on trailer? I said 10-12K on boat, and 2-3K on trailer. (I truly don't know value) Made it for $15K
Do you normally tow or keep on lake? Tow.
How fast dose it go, I'm just curious? 55mph i said (true top speed). He replyed, Wow that's fast on the water. I said not really, but it burns gas fast.. He LOLed.

Premium came to a little over $500. I asked why so much for something I don't use to often, when pontoons & other high power canoes are like $100 for a yr.?.

He said it all on how much HP you have. More HP, faster the boat is, more likely some thing is going to happen. I replayed, What!, I have bass and fishing boats passing me so there doing like 60-65 and that guy is bouncing all around and holding on for dear life. One had 250 and another had a 300 on the back. At least Im not bouncing around and if I come across another boats wake, I'm safe. He said he doesn't make the rules just have to fallow them. I said, I under stand.
