Question 606 HR 7.4 MPI in a CLEAN 01 Boss 232... High HR MPI Russian Roulette???

http://lakecumberlandmarine.com/2001...ied-pre-owned/

I'm digging this boat and have them talked down, but I've heard mixed opinions on high HR black top MPI's... The boat has obvioulsy been well taken care of, or it cleaned up REALLY well. Thoughts, opinions? I'm sure I'll get a few... haha... I'm really liking the Rinker 232's as well... I just can't seem to find them with the platform, captains call, and a 5.7 EFI+...

Thanks gents.

Black motors taken care of have went well over 1000 hrs. Compression and leak down test. Check risers and manifolds.

+1. I would consider that Mid-Time on a 330 HP 454. If it's been well taken care of and the above check out I would be at all concerned.

I've seen a couple 330 and 454 Mags in the 3000 Hour range with proper care. Rebuild one for a friend with a charter boat that had 5000+ hours on the meter. It only used a quart of oil every 25-30 hours.

You have to pull that engine and replace with forged internals. The exhaust must be changed. The drive is junk, there are much better $30k options out there. Needs a galvanic isolator and full halon system before use. Thos batteries are no good, not marine approved. Need two more bilge pumps for safety. Pre oiler for the engine is recommended. Make sure you are towing with at least an F450 or equal, medium duty like C4500 or International is preferred and really the only the legal way to tow, you insurance will not pay otherwise. I would also look into a fith wheel trailer from myco, the stock one looks unsafe

I agree with the replies. The 7.4l was widely used in cruiser applications, logging thousands of hours. You just don't hear about them here. That boat looks clean and well cared for, and 600 hrs means it was used instead of sitting. Ultra low hours without proper care, or years of storage can cause more problems than a boat that was used every year. A boat is a gamble wither way, however this one looks safe

Geez, for a minute there I thought you were serious!

The only thing I'd add is that the 454/330 isn't an easily modified motor due to the original component selection. If you want to go faster, you'll really have to pull it and start with something fresh.

I had that motor in a 1999 266 Crownline. Great motor. Had about 450 hours on it when I sold it and still ran as new.

That is a clean boat. 600 Hrs no issue like others have stated. Comp test, and get a read out of the time spent at what RPM. 600 hrs at red line is no bueno, 600 hrs at cruise is no big deal. Where do you plan on boating? A couple of us noise makers are smith lake just about every weekend.

if that has been well kept and serviced and you are able to beat them up on the price its a cheap rebuild to OEM specs. At least at that point ya know what ya got. A lot of guys are looking for long term turn key reliability with decent moderate performance and this platform delivers just that. I'd say if that is what you are after you'd be doing pretty good to get in at a good price, use it for the coming season and do a stock rebuild next winter.

Hi SLOWBRAH

We have a 2000 Cobalt 226 with a 7.4 MPI. I understand your concerns -- Before we bought the boat I searched high and low to find out about the engine/longevity etc. When we purchased the boat it had a little less than 300 hours - Compression was 170 in each cylinder with no variation. From my research as long as you don't beat the snot out of the engine 1000 hours can be easily achieved - as with any engine - changing the oil, make sure it doesn't get hot (impeller service) and just plain common sense should work. So far the engine has been wonderful - no oil consumption and operates around the 165 F temperature. The only issue that I have is that I can hear the air sucking sound -- I've been told that some of the models have a sponge filter that helps reduce the noise - but for my model this was not included????

The boat you are looking at looks great -- VERY CLEAN

All the best and safe boating
