Default Port versus Starboard Steering Wheel

New to the forum. Haven't had a boat in awhile, but have owned several in the past. Question please . . . Some of the boats I am looking at have steering on the port and some (most) have steering on the starboard. What's up with that? Pros? Cons? I am looking for a LaveyCraft, Nordic, or similar boat to purchase. 25' - 27'. Pleasure boating on inland lakes.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Thanks <3

Most are stbd. I think I read once it stemmed from something to do with the original rotation of propellor would lean boat to port so they started putting helm on stbd to balance that.

Thanks Dave! I did try to "search" the topic first but used "port" and "starboard" terminology instead of left and right! Appreciate it.
