There is no speed limit on Lake Norman. There are, however, NC Wildlife Patrol boats (as well as 4 counties with patrol boats) that will stop you in a second. Mainly looking for alcohol violations. The Wildlife Officers do not play around so it would be wise to save the beers for the evening.
As far as a noise ordinance goes . . . it is a little bit of a gray area. This is quoted directly from the NC Wildlife Boating Regulations handbook . . .
"Vessel engines with open-air exhausts and the capacity
to operate at more than 4000 RPM must have effective
muffling equipment installed on each exhaust manifold
stack. Licensed commercial fishing vessels are exempt"
I have Gill Offshore Dry on a built BBC and it is a loud boat. There are a few that are louder.
The law enforcement does not seem too concerned with the performance boats and the noise but I sense
a day when I and others will be required to add mufflers.
So come and enjoy Lake Norman. It is a great place to boat.
We have a "Fun Run" every year. Here is a link . . .
